trump is Hurting People

By Bill Mefford

We have all watched donald trump this week in horror. He is acting like a man who won the presidency in a decisive landslide, when it was actually the Electoral College who put this madman in office. Let us not forget, he lost the election.

So now, in between all of the ridiculous tweets the media seems so obsessed with, President Haman as I like to call him is starting to put into place policies which will hurt people and create real harm. Today (Tuesday) he signed Executive Orders that will allow the Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines to proceed. These pipelines will force people from their homes and could potentially wreak enormous environmental damage. In addition, the DAPL in particular will destroy sacred land.

But donald trump could not care less. He claims he wants more jobs even though the jobs he is creating will only be temporary. The misery and heartache he is causing will last lifetimes. But profits for big businesses is his real aim and placing profits over people is now the world we live in.

On Wednesday, I do not yet know for sure what his Executive Orders will be, though it is expected that he will start to build the damn wall he and his rabid followers seem to be so fixated on.

But that is not all. Coming sometime this week, perhaps Wednesday, it is likely that donald trump will call for a pause in the refugee resettlement program, dramatically cut the numbers, stop the resettlement of Syrian refugees entirely, and create something of a religious litmus test that will discriminate against Muslims.

There is so much wrong with this, but let me focus on a couple of things. Pausing the resettlement process will actually grind refugee processing to a halt entirely. Each step of the refugee security check process is time sensitive, so a pause in processing will mean that refugees are pulled off of planes, families who are anticipating their loved ones are devastated, and communities that have planned for refugees to arrive are left in limbo. Such an interruption in processing will force refugees who were set to arrive in the United States today to wait months and even years to go through fingerprinting, interviews, health screenings, and multiple security screenings yet again, all while their lives are in danger.

Further, by stopping the resettlement of Syrian refugees and creating a religious litmus test that discriminates against Muslims, we forfeit the very heart of the values of what the United States was founded on: religious freedom.

This doesn’t make any sense unless we realize that the entire basis for donald trump’s policies is racism and bigotry. And this is why I call him President Haman.

So, what are we to do?

There are actually several things to do so I hope you will share this post widely to your networks and your friends. Here are three initial things (with more to come):

First., Sign this petition stating opposition to any plans to stop refugee resettlement. Remember to confirm your sign-on via your email, otherwise it won’t be counted.

Second, you can Tweet @realDonaldTrump & @POTUS! God knows he loves this thing more than actually reading books. Here are a couple samples:

.@realDonaldTrump & @POTUS Don't stop welcoming refugees. Resettlement demonstrates the best of our values #RefugeesWelcome

.@realDonaldTrump & @POTUS People of faith OPPOSE a religious litmus test for refugees bit.ly/FaithLeaders4ALLRefugees hias.org/1500rabbis #RefugeesWelcome

.@realDonaldTrump & @POTUS Denying Muslim refugees safety is an affront to religious liberty #RefugeesWelcome bit.ly/FaithLeaders4ALLRefugees hias.org/1500rabbis.

.@realDonaldTrump & @POTUS More than 800 faith leaders are opposed to any policy that would keep Muslim refugees from seeking safety: bit.ly/FaithLeaders4ALLRefugees

.@realDonaldTrump & @POTUS Christians oppose policies that would deny Muslims refuge and preference Christians bit.ly/FaithLeaders4ALLRefugees

Lastly, send the White House a Facebook message at Facebook.com/WhiteHouse AND submit an electronic message at whitehouse.gov/contact. Here is a sample you should make your own:

Mr. Trump, We are hearing that you will stop refugee resettlement based on someone's nationality or religion. As a person of faith, I am STRONGLY opposed to any policy change that would deny access to refugees based on their religion or nationality. Please reject such ideas, as a religious litmus test for safety is an affront to religious liberty. I urge you to allow the U.S. refugee program to continue to resettle refugees that need our protection regardless of where they come from or how they pray.

OK, y’all, no dramatic ending to this post. We have been told what to expect with a trump presidency and it is here. Are we ready? Are you ready to take action to stop a man who is bent on hurting people? This is our chance. Let’s take advantage of it and get to work. People are counting on us.
